Walking Football Funding Survey

Would your organisation be interested in applying for a third set of Walking Football Funding in Spring/Summer 2022? Please let us know via this survey.

The Age UK Walking Football Programme, funded by the Football Association and Sport England, has helped to set up 77 walking football groups across the Age UK Network to date. We are now looking to gauge interest among Partners in a potential third cohort of funding for the Walking Football programme in Spring/ Summer 2022. Whether you already have walking football groups as part of the programme (or outside of it) and want to expand your provision, or if you haven’t delivered this activity before but would be interested to do so, we would love to hear from you via this short survey. The survey should take less than a minute to complete.

Thank you in advance for your time and if you have any queries or expressions of interest following this, please contact us on walkingfootball@ageuk.org.uk.

Please note that this survey is only intended to understand Partners’ interest in further funding opportunities, and by completing the survey you are not committing to anything.

Applications still open and clarification on The Age UK’s Walking Football Programme

Applications for the final round of grant funding for our Walking Football Programme are still open. Find out all the details.

Applications to be part of Age UK’s exciting Walking Football Programme are still open! 42 grants of £2,500 funded by the Football Association and 19 grants of up to £10,000 funded by Sport England are available. We’ve had great interest in the programme so far, with lots of innovative and exciting proposals for how this Programme will improve the health and wellbeing of older people in their local communities. Applications will close on 13th September 2021. If you have already started an application or if you are yet to begin, there is plenty of time to complete and submit these through GIFTS.

The grant application form, guidance and budget documents can be found on The Loop here.

We also wanted to advise of a clarification we have made to the Sport England Grants:

  • You can apply for more than one Sport England grant. However, there are limited Sport England grants available, and should you wish to apply for two grants from this funding pathway (or were awarded a grant in Cohort one and wish to apply for another) we must evidence the need for this within an application alongside an understanding of how value for money could be achieved through sharing resources across groups.
  • Please consider multiple FA grants or a combination of both before applying for multiple Sport England grants.
  • If you have already started an application and wish to amend based on this clarification, please let us know and we will inform you of the best possible next steps.

If you have any questions regarding this programme, or if you are undecided as to whether to apply, please contact Peter.Dutton@ageuk.org.uk to discuss further.

Walking Football Programme – Final Round of Funding Now Available

We are delighted to announce that applications for the final round of grant funding for our Walking Football Programme are now open.

We are delighted to launch the second and final round of funding for The Age UK Walking Football Programme, in partnership with the Football Association and Sport England, with 42 grants of £2,500 funded by the Football Association and 19 grants of up to £10,000 funded by Sport England now available. The deadline for applications is 12pm, Monday 13th September 2021. Read on for further details, or access the grant application form, guidance and budget documents on The Loop here.

Walking football is a slower version of the game and has become increasingly popular in recent years, designed to help people get fit or maintain an active lifestyle no matter what their age and fitness levels or experience of playing the game.

The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a decrease in older people’s physical activity levels which has preceded to a reduction in one’s ability to do day-to-day activities, joint and muscle pain, and had a negative impact on mental health. It is essential that we support older people to regain their confidence, restore fitness, and improve their mental well-being; walking football is a great opportunity to do that in a way that is safe, fun and inclusive way for older people.

Grassroots football returned in April 2021 which allowed us to re-launch the programme with 24 local Age UKs setting up 42 new walking football groups that began delivery this Summer. All groups followed FA and Government guidance as the Nation followed the steps in the COVID-19 Roadmap. We want to reassure all partners that the delivery of this programme has the health and safety of older people at the forefront of all delivery. With all restrictions now eased, we hope that older people will continue to be encouraged to take part in physical activities as has been shown already in our early walking football sessions.

Applications for funding will be welcomed from local Age UKs in England; whether you want to start up new sessions in your area or already have existing walking football sessions and want to create new groups to expand provision.

Football Association Pilot Training Course Available for Local Age UKs

The Football Association is offering a discount on their “Introduction to Football” training pilot. Find out how you can get involved.

The Football Association have an exciting opportunity for a limited number of people to take part in the pilot for a new training course that has been developed, and as a partner in our new Walking Football Programme, we wanted to let the network know about it.

The FA’s ‘Introduction to Football’ Course is a great opportunity for any new or existing football coaches who are looking to widen their knowledge and gain formal qualifications. This course is usually £160 (RRP) but will be available at a discounted rate of £50 to those that wish to apply. All learners will also receive access to the FA’s new safeguarding and first aid qualifications as part of this offer. This training is online and can be completed at your own pace throughout March, including self-study and optional webinars led by the FA.

A pre-requisite for taking part in this training pilot is that individuals must have already completed or be able to complete the FA Playmaker Course by 22nd February 2021. The FA Playmaker Course is an entry-level training which takes around 6-8 hours to complete online. We appreciate that this is a very quick turnaround, but we have just been informed of this pilot and we thought this was still an exciting training opportunity worth sharing.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please get in touch with Peter Dutton, Project Manager at Age UK, to discuss the next steps – peter.dutton@ageuk.org.uk.

Please note, this training is not part of Age UK’s Walking Football grant Programme but has been offered to our network due to our ongoing partnership with the FA.

We are delighted to relaunch our new Walking Football Programme, in partnership with the Football Association and Sport England, with applications for grant funding now open. Grassroots football is currently suspended, and the timing of our funding opportunity may be a concern to local partners amidst the current circumstances regarding COVID-19. We want to reassure all partners that the delivery of this programme will comply with the latest Government guidance and the Football Association’s advice on ‘returning to play’ for COVID-19, with the health and safety of older people always remaining the first priority. More information about the programme’s timings are contained within the ‘Overview Document’ linked below, but as delivery of walking football sessions is not be expected to start until May/June 2021, we feel that now is a good opportunity to begin planning on how to support older people to be more active again. That being said, the timescales we’ve provided are indicative, and we will take a flexible approach to starting delivery as necessary. If you have any questions or concerns about this then please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Applications for funding will be welcomed from Local Age UKs in England; whether you want to start up new sessions in your area or already have existing walking football sessions and want to create new groups to expand provision.

New Walking Football Programme coming in the New Year

Our new Walking Football Programme, in partnership with will be relaunching in the New Year, with applications for grant funding opening in January.

We are delighted to confirm that our new Walking Football Programme, in partnership with the Football Association and Sport England will be relaunching in the New Year, and applications for grant funding will open in January.

Walking football is a slower version of the game which has become increasingly popular in recent years, as it is designed to help people get fit or maintain an active lifestyle no matter what their age and fitness levels or experience of playing the game.

The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a decrease in older people’s physical activity levels, reducing their ability to do day-to-day activities, leaving them with joint and muscle pain, and having a negative impact on their mental health. It is essential that we support older people to regain their confidence, restore fitness, and improve their mental well-being, and walking football is a great opportunity to do that in a way that is safe, fun and inclusive for older people.

The return of grassroots football is being seen as a welcome relief to many during the pandemic, and we hope that local Age UKs across England will join us in the movement to encourage older people to embrace sport and physical activity once more in 2021.

Applications for funding will be welcomed from Local Age UKs in England; whether you want to start up new sessions in your area or already have existing walking football sessions and want to expand provision further.

The grant application form and guidance will go live in January 2021, and we’ll be in touch again in the New Year with more information so do keep an eye out for further communications on this.
