Exciting funding opportunity for a new dementia programme in 2021

We are very pleased to announce that Age UK will receive funding for 90 grants for the Age UK Network to deliver Dementia Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (MCST).

As we head into the festive period, we are very pleased to announce that Age UK will be receiving £2.9 million funding to deliver Dementia Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (MCST). We are not able to share the name of the funder at this point but will do so in the New Year. This is an exciting opportunity for 90 grants to be awarded to the Age UK Network to deliver the only non-drug treatment recommended to improve cognition, independence and well-being for people living with mild to moderate dementia. We have successfully delivered two pilots of MCST in the past, so if you’d like to learn more about it, please visit our webpage.

MCST is a weekly programme that provides group members with the opportunity to take part in meaningful and stimulating activities that are proven to help maintain memory and mental functioning. The groups are also a fun, supportive environment where people can build new friendships and peer support.

This is a three-year project, and funding will be available across three delivery cohorts, each lasting 12 months (3 months set up, 6 months of delivery and 3 months wind down). This project has been designed with Covid-19 in mind. Therefore, partners will be encouraged to deliver MCST via a mixture of virtual and face-to-face groups. Delivery of MCST sessions online will provide a contingency plan for delivering the service safely in the instance of social distancing restrictions or further lockdowns and provides an opportunity for those to participate who may struggle to attend a venue, for example if living in a rural area.

We are anticipating opening applications for the first cohort of 30 partners in February 2021, with successful partners commencing set up in April 2021, but more information will be provided in in the New Year.

We wanted to give partners advance notice of this opportunity to enable forward planning for the upcoming year and have put together a Q&A sheet below, which we trust is helpful:

If you have any queries about this new funding opportunity, then please email the team on DementiaMCST@ageuk.org.uk. Please note that this email account will not be reviewed from 18th December 2020 to 11th January 2021, but we will get back to you as soon as possible upon our return to the office.

We are very much looking forward to working with the Age UK network to make this programme a great success.
