Age UK Leicester, Shire & Rutland were very pleased to have had a piece published on the BBC website all about their new over 55’s ballet classes – the Silver Swan taster sessions. The piece was filmed at their day centre at Clarence House and hopefully will encourage people to get out, get fit and to use the centre.

“I’ve always wanted to do ballet. You know, the little girl wants to have the tutu, but unfortunately we didn’t have the finance to do it. So it’s a lifelong dream – a long time coming but it’s never too late.”

Age UK Network News Roundup – 17/12/21

Take a look at the latest weekly roundup of news from across the Age UK Network.

Welcome to the final Network News Roundup of 2021! This edition features Age UK Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin’s 70th Birthday appeal and a Partnership Manager vacancy at Age UK Lewisham and Southwark. If you have a story from your organisation that you would like us to share with the Network, such as recent events, campaigns, or awards, please let us know at signpost@ageuk.org.uk and we’ll add it to this roundup in the new year. In the meantime, we want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Age UK Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin 70th birthday appeal

Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin launched their Platinum Appeal in November 2019 to span their 70th birthday on 11 November 2020. The ambition was to raise funds from a variety of fundraising events and celebrate the charity’s achievements over the past 70 years.

Just 3 months into the appeal, new challenges arose from the pandemic which resulted in all their fundraising events being put on hold until 2021. The fundraising team called on local people to support the appeal to take up their own challenge event and get sponsorship. There were lots of fundraisers finding creative ways to generate donations; one schoolgirl held a Christmas street concert for people living with dementia. Members of Bridgnorth Golf Club put together a recipe book which is still available to purchase and a member of staff and volunteer cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

The money raised is now being used in a variety of ways; supporting people living with dementia and their carers, one-to-one training to help older people get online to stay connected with loved ones. Also supporting vulnerable older people to access advice and information such as benefits claims and blue badge applications.

Heather Osborne, Chief Executive for Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin said:

“We want to say a huge thank you to all the local companies, and individuals who supported our Platinum Appeal, without them we just wouldn’t be able to help so many older people. The past 2 years have been difficult for all charities to fundraise, we are overwhelmed with the support we have received. I’m delighted that older people’s lives are being changed thanks to the efforts of our fundraisers, it’s heart-warming to hear the positive feedback from our staff and volunteers.”

You can find out more about Age UK Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin’s Platinum Appeal on their website and view a video message thanking all supporters here.

Age UK Selby District Set to Close – Minibus Available for Partners to Purchase

As you may have seen in yesterday’s Signpost Daily Update, we are sorry to let you know that earlier this year, Age UK Selby District’s Board of Trustees made the difficult decision to cease operating and close the charity down. Full details of this closure can be found in yesterday’s post here.

As part of the closure process, Age UK Selby District is looking to divest itself of a four and a half year-old 14–seater minibus on a part payment and donate the remainder value basis. This is being offered to the Age UK network in the first instance.

Vehicle details are as follows:

  • Registration: DK66 CGG
  • Mercedes – Benz Sprinter 514CDI 14-seater minibus in silver
  • Year of make 2017 – first registered 01.02.2017
  • Disabled passenger vehicle with fully working tail lift with up-to-date service record
  • Manual sidestep
  • Fuel type: diesel
  • Mileage: 36,788 at last MOT January 2021
  • Vehicle purchase price £59,892.00 plus VAT. Supplied by Minibus Options.

To help the organisation cover its closure costs and to be in a positive position post closure to leave a local legacy for future service provision across the district, the charity is looking for a part payment contribution of around £20,000.
