We know that participating in physical activity is beneficial for our physical and mental wellbeing, and Walking Football is a great way of offering older people the opportunity to participate in something that is safe, fun, and sociable.
Running from November 2020 to November 2023, local Age UKs will be funded by the partnership with The FA and Sport England to run sessions specifically for older people. The programme will be delivered across three ‘cohorts’, with the first cohort of 25 local Age UKs ‘kicking off’ in April 2021, the second in the Autumn of 2021 and the third and final cohort in the Autumn of 2022.
Tackling Inequalities Fund
The Tackling Inequalities Fund (TIF) is a £20 million programme funded by Sport England that was established in 2020 to help to tackle rising inactivity levels and inequalities exacerbated by the impact of Covid-19.

Sport England appointed a range of National Partners to deliver the TIF programme, including the network of 43 Active Partnerships, Versus Arthritis, Royal Yachting Association and Canal & River Trust. Most of these have operated an open grant programme, distributing funds to a wide range of organisations, many of whom have not previously received Sport England funding. Over twenty-five local Age UKs have already received TIF funding.
Age UK became a National Partner in April 2021 and has been distributing a £225,000 programme of grants to local Age UK partners across England to assist them in developing physical activities for older people to encourage them to become more active.
The key target groups are:
- People with long term health conditions
- People with a disability
- Ethnic minority groups
- People from Lower Socio-Economic Groups
