Trustees’ Week 7 to 11 November

Trustees’ Week celebrates the achievements of the 1 million charity trustees in the UK and this year’s theme is “making a difference in changing times”. Throughout the week you’ll have the chance to connect with other trustees to share your experiences. You’ll also be able to develop your skills through our wide range of events, training and guidance.

Live Longer Better – face to face event 19th October

The Live Longer Better movement promotes the 4 R’s: reconditioning, rejuvenation, risk reduction and revolution with the aim of enabling people to do just that: live longer better.

All Age UKs are invited to join the first in-person Live Longer Better national event where the programme will reaffirm its collective mission.

Learning and Resources from the Ageing Better Programme

The National Lottery Community Fund’s Ageing Better programme was a seven-year, £87 million programme designed to test different ways of improving the lives of people over 50 by addressing social isolation and loneliness within local communities. The programme was delivered by 14 place-based partnerships across England.

In this article, Ruth Bamford, Learning Lead for Ageing Better at The National Lottery Community Fund, shares below some of the impact from their Ageing Better programme, as well as highlighting the importance of delivering a person-centred approach when addressing loneliness and social isolation.

Age UK Influencing Conference 2022 “Getting through a difficult winter”


You can now sign up here to attend this year’s Age UK Influencing Conference on Wednesday 12th October 2022! We are welcoming staff, volunteers and trustees from across the Age UK Network and multiple attendees from the same local Age UK are welcome and encouraged.

This year’s conference will be looking at the challenges older people (and the local Age UKs supporting them) face, and sharing ideas, evidence and practical ways to improve their lives. We’ll hear from local Age UKs and policy experts on topics such as the cost of living crisis, digital exclusion, tackling health inequalities through targeted approaches to black and minority ethnic older people, and working with ICSs, sharing tips from across the network. We will also consider the very difficult winter ahead for local Age UKs, as energy prices soar, and what we can do to help through our influencing activity.

NCVO run a series of online training events specifically for trustees covering topics such as:

  • Safeguarding for trustees
  • Quality, diversity and inclusion

Association of Chairs Event “Rethinking Charity Closure”

The Association of Chairs is running an event on 15 November to explore the issues around deciding to close a charity. Although this is often viewed as a negative decision, it can sometimes be a normal part of a charity’s natural life span.

As CC3 ‘The Essential Trustee’ highlights: Acting in the charity’s best interests means always doing what the trustees decide will best enable the charity to carry out its purposes, both now and for the future.

It’s not about serving:

  • the interests of trustees or staff
  • the personal interests of members or beneficiaries
  • the personal interests of supporters, funders or donors
  • the charity as an institution in itself, or preserving it for its own sake

Sometimes trustees need to consider collaborating or merging with another charity, or even spending all of the charity’s resources and bringing it to a close.

The event brings together three people with insight and expertise on closing charities. They offer practical hands-on experience and will share their insights on how to open up conversations about closure, and if it is the right course, how to navigate it well.

The resources include:

  • Ideas on recruiting and retaining trustees
  • Guidance on CEO appraisals
  • Information on Age UK network quality standards
  • A briefing on the Charity Governance Code

Hempsons’ Free Trustee Training Webinars – November 2022

Hempsons are delighted to announce that their annual trustee training will now be held online. They will be joined by haysmacintyre, charity accountants, who have supported the trustee training for a number of years.

The course will share experiences of some of the governance lessons that charities have learnt through the pandemic and as they re-focus strategy afterwards. These include an acceleration in decision-making and implementation. Organisational speed of response has been enabled by streamlined, focused delegation and greater board entrustment of staff and volunteers. Other efficiencies can include proportionate reporting to the board on the core areas they need to measure.

The programme has been split into three separate sessions, which can be attended as a full programme, or individually – the sessions are interlinked and build on each other. It has been designed for charity Trustees and Chief Executives, and is suitable for those new in post as well as the more experienced who are wanting a refresher.

The form for the second Quarterly PIR of 2022/23 is now available for you to complete ahead of the 2nd November deadline.

This is to let you know that the latest Partner Information Return (PIR) is now available for completion here. This covers the period between 1st July and 30th September 2022, Quarter 2 of 2022/2023. The deadline for completion is the 2nd November 2022. Find out full details below, including the link to the data report from Q1 of 2022/23.

The PIR is used to enhance Age UK’s knowledge of the Network, so that we can display our collective strength in media, fundraising, and influencing opportunities.

The more returns we receive, the more powerful and useful the data we can display when talking to funders over the winter, demonstrating the breadth of the Age UK Network’s work with older people.

Older people’s views on the ongoing impact of Covid on the delivery of Age UK Services 

Highlights of the conversations Age UK has had with older people on their Services Sounding Board about their feelings on face-to-face services.

In recent months, the data and feedback we have collected from local Age UKs has indicated that there remains some reluctance on the part of older people to engage in face-to-face interaction, either in their home or at another venue. In light of this, we spoke to the Age UK Services Sounding Board about this issue to gather their views and help inform our next steps. You can view the highlights of this conversation below.

The Services Sounding Board is a group of older people, from different locations across England, who represent seldom-heard voices (for example carers, people from a range of ethnic minority groups, people with disabilities, people whose first language is not English).

The conversation at the Sounding Board provided useful insight, a few highlights summarised below: 

  • Many older people have lost confidence and remain concerned about the risks around Covid. One person said “fear can easily become a habit”.
  • People think more carefully before leaving the house. Following Covid, they realise what is possible without needing to go out so, if it isn’t essential, they may choose not to.
  • For some people, there is a reluctance to use public transport and risk being exposed to Covid, but for those who don’t have a car, it is more difficult to get out and about.
  • There was no consensus from the group as to what steps in relation to Covid should or shouldn’t be taken in order to keep people safe. For example, some people stated that use of hand sanitiser is essential, others felt it was useful in general hygiene but has minimal impact on the spread of Covid.
  • Where services are taking steps to keep people safe from Covid, they should ensure this is clear so people know in advance of coming along to any activity.  
  • Messaging could come from the facilitator of the relevant service/activity to demonstrate a personal awareness of the issues.
  • The group felt that there is a lack of clear messaging about how to stay safe. Many people have remained mindful of the “stay at home” message, which has remained one clear way to protect yourself. The mixed messages about other aspects of Covid safety have led to confusion and caution as a result. 

The feedback from the group has been shared with the Age UK Content team and Age UK’s Covid information and messaging will be reviewed as a result. We hope that the feedback above is useful for in considering any steps that can be taken to encourage older people to access services in-person (where this is beneficial for them).

Impact of Covid-19 on Older People – 4th wave research report & fact sheet

Age UK’s Health Influencing Team have shared the report, presentation, and polling data for the fourth wave of their research into the impact of Covid-19 on older people.

The Health Influencing team are pleased to share the fourth wave of research into the impact of Covid-19 on older people. The latest research, conducted in March and April 2022, has shown a slight improvement across many areas of life, but nowhere near as much as we would have expected or liked to see. Charity Commission “Trust in Charities” Research Published

The Charity Commission has published its latest “Trust in Charities” research, which includes the views of both the public and trustees. Conducted in spring 2022, the research found that people living in more affluent areas with higher ethnic and cultural diversity trusted charities more compared to those in less diverse areas with low economic security. It also reported that fewer members of the public (56%) thought charities were ‘essential’ or ‘very important’ for society than last year (60%).

Being part of the Age UK Network” – online briefing session for Chairs of local Age UKs

Age UK and the Age England Association (AEA) are offering all Chairs at local Age UKs the opportunity to find out more about the support and resources that are available to local Age UKs and Age Cymru local partners.

This online briefing session will take place on Wednesday 21 September from 9am to 11am.

The aims of the session are:

  • To give an overview of the Age UK network, your organisation’s partnership with Age UK and the role of the Age England Association (AEA) 
  • To share experience with peers on chairing, good governance, leadership and more
  • To find out where to go for more detail on the support and collaboration opportunities available  

There are up to 20 places at each session and all Chairs are welcome. These events may be of interest if you have been appointed as Chair quite recently or if would like a refresher on the benefits of being part of a network with a shared purpose and brand.

Please let us know if you would like to take part but cannot make the above date and we will organise further sessions.

Press Release: Age UK’s open letter to the candidates for Prime Minister

Age UK has written to both candidates for Prime Minister to share the findings from a recent survey of older people’s priorities. Read the full press release here.

Age UK recently surveyed people aged 65+ to find out their priorities for our next Prime Minister, with the cost of living crisis emerging as their top priority. Age UK’s latest press release includes a letter to both candidates for Prime Minister calling on them to commit to firm action on tackling the worsening shortfalls in funding and personnel undermining both the NHS and social care.

The event will take place on Wednesday 19th October 2022 from 11.00 to 16.00. Live Longer Better shared the following update:

Join us for our first IN-PERSON Live Longer Better national event where we will reaffirm our collective mission and how we describe it.

The Four Rs:

Reconditioning: restoring ability lost not only during lockdown but with decades of existing in the modern environment, dominated by the car, the sofa, the TV, the computer and the desk job.

Rejuvenation: aiming to get as able as one was five or even ten years before – Drop a Decade!

Risk reduction: preventing, delaying, slowing down and even reversing the risk of dementia, and frailty.

Revolution: the continuing need to move from fear of population ageing to the celebration of healthy longevity and this requires a cultural revolution, which means we need to rewire the brains of not only older people but also…

  • Friends and relatives
  • Health and social care professionals
  • The general public
  • The press

What does this mean?

This means we have to start where each of these groups are at present and then create new ways of thinking (e.g. health and social care need to see our work not only as good for older people, but good for them as a means of reducing the need and demand for health and social care.) This is an opportunity to come together in person to challenge, discuss and explore what we can and must do, to really address the Four Rs. This event will include visionary insights, case spotlights and the compelling evidence, sharing some excellent presentations from expert speakers including of course Sir Muir Gray, whilst also enabling the much missed truly interactive and networking sessions. 

An event with a difference – time for a cultural change!

Our virtual LLB National Events have proved extremely popular – over 2,000 delegates have attended our last 8 events with cross sector representation including local authorities, Age UK, NHS, Care Homes, Leisure Trusts and various voluntary and community sector partners. Feedback given by delegates confirmed that the events fully met their expectations.

This Live Longer Better collaboration between Sir Muir Gray, Optimal Ageing Associates and Active Partnerships provides a unique combination of skills and resources, bringing together the cultures of coaching and health. Being part of the Age UK Network” – online briefing session for Chairs of local Age UKs

Age UK and the Age England Association (AEA) are offering all Chairs at local Age UKs the opportunity to find out more about the support and resources that are available to local Age UKs and Age Cymru local partners.

This online briefing session will take place on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 24 August from 9am to 11am
  • Wednesday 21 September from 9am to 11am
