Cost of Cold Campaign | Tweet the Chancellor!

We’ve launched a social media campaign aimed at the Chancellor to keep the pressure on him ahead of the Spring Statement in two weeks. Find out how to get involved.

Thank you all for your help in supporting our Cost of Cold campaign so far. As you know, we are calling on the Government to provide sufficient support for older people in the face of an unprecedented rise in energy prices. We’re launching a social media campaign aimed at the Chancellor to keep the pressure on him ahead of the Spring Statement in two weeks’ time. Find out how you can get involved below and read an update on last week’s request for letters to the Chancellor.

The story so far

As many of you know from supporting our Cost of Cold campaign, we are calling on the Government to provide sufficient support for older people in the face of an unprecedented rise in energy prices. Following the rise in the price cap, the average energy bill is set to rise by £693 per year, but the Chancellor’s support package is only providing a maximum of £350 per household.

For so many older people, every penny of their pension is spoken for before it comes in – there’s nothing to spare. So it is unacceptable to ask people to shell out hundreds more pounds per year, especially when they are on low or fixed incomes.

We need to let the Chancellor know his sums don’t add up.

Social media campaign

We are launching a social media campaign aimed at the Chancellor to keep the pressure on him ahead of the Spring Statement in two weeks. We know the Chancellor pays close attention to social media, so this is a good way to get him to take notice. You can help add to the pressure by retweeting our video of older people from across England asking the Chancellor to help with energy bills. You can also tweet the Chancellor and Treasury with the template below:

.@RishiSunak @hmtreasury please do more to support older people struggling with #energy bills.

Bills are rising by £700, but your support package is only worth about £350. #ItDoesntAddUpRishi

Too many older people are worried. Will you listen?

Write to your MP

You can also support the campaign by using this template letter to write to your MP. The letter asks your MP to urge the Chancellor to deliver the necessary support to older people so they don’t have to choose between heating or eating.

Letters to the Chancellor

We previously asked you to help gather letters from your clients and supporters and we have already received hundreds! Thank you for your support in gathering these letters. We will deliver them to the Chancellor next week.

Every letter and every tweet on the #ItDoesntAddUpRishi hashtag makes a difference.

If you would like help joining the campaign or writing to your MP, please get in touch with luke.pilot@ageuk.org.uk

Thank you as always for all your support.
