Support in finding ways to reduce your energy costs

Age UK’s Facilities team can help local Age UKs to select the energy suppliers that work best for you. Find out all the details here.

During the Covid crisis, we’ve identified that more suppliers – purporting to be experts – are contacting partners suggesting they can save you money on your energy bills. Often this a sales pitch and you have no way of knowing how much you will save or how long you will be on the hook for. Age UK’s Facilities team run a portfolio with hundreds of properties and have become very experienced at spotting the typical pitfalls that organisations fall into when signing up to cost saving deals.

They want to offer their support to help you select options that work for you, from addressing questions such as:

  1. Am I actively trying to reduce my energy consumption? Simple changes of habits can save up to 10% of your energy bill.
  2. Are there opportunities to save money long term? Capital projects such as LED lighting and insulation will pay back in 18 months to 3 years.
  3. Why does everyone want to validate my bills? They are after a cut of your money. The can claw back your over-payments and keep some for themselves. Many of these service providers will take up to 50% of your over payment.
  4. Am I paying the right bill for the right meter? Often companies are paying higher tariffs for no reason when they have a larger building (supply profile costs). You can challenge this.
  5. What about CCL? If you use less than 1000 kwh per month you can avoid climate charge levy and get a reduction in your VAT.
  6. Most suppliers will offer 100% renewably-sourced electricity at no extra cost.

To addressing tougher questions such as ‘who is the best supplier’; ‘do I have to use a broker’ etc, and they’re happy to give guidance and a steer on ‘Dos and Don’ts’.

The Facilities Team are not selling anything and are not promoting a particular provider – they’re just here to help. To find out more and access their support, please contact Steve Brown, Head of Facilities: Steve.Brown@ageuk.org.uk
